A Firm Bed Isn't a Hard BedFirm gets a bad reputation, usually from people who've slept on something genuinely hard. There's a difference:
•
Hard means there's nothing between you and the support — no give, pressure builds at the shoulder and hip, and you wake up sore.
•
Firm means the surface gives just enough to relieve pressure, then stops. You stay on top of the mattress rather than sinking into it, and your spine keeps its natural line all night.
The Skyline 25 cm is the second kind. It's rated around 7 out of 10 on the firmness scale — clearly supportive, with a thin but real comfort layer doing genuine pressure relief.
How the Firm Feel Is BuiltFirmness isn't one ingredient; it's the relationship between the comfort layer and what's underneath it. Here, that balance is deliberate:
The comfort layer is restrained on purpose. At 2.5 cm comfort foam + 1.5 cm gel memory foam + 3 cm high-resilience foam, there's real cushioning — but not so much that you lose contact with the springs. You settle a few centimetres and then the coils take over. That "stops rather than keeps going" moment is exactly what firm sleepers are after.
The springs do the work. A full set of 2.0 mm individually pocketed coils (roughly 14 gauge) sits beneath the comfort layers. Because each spring is wrapped in its own fabric pocket and moves independently, the mattress responds point by point: the coils under your hips compress appropriately, the ones under your calves barely move. Nothing pulls on anything else, so the surface stays level instead of developing a hollow in the middle.
And it stays quiet. Independent coils absorb movement at the source, so a partner turning over on the other side doesn't send a ripple across the bed.
Three Rows of Reinforcement Around the EdgeThe perimeter is where ordinary pocket spring mattresses give out first — sit on the side and it feels like a slope.
This one runs three rows of heavier 2.2 mm coils (roughly 13 gauge) around all four sides. In practice:
1.
Sitting on the edge feels solid — putting on shoes, getting in and out of bed, or sitting to read doesn't collapse the side.
2.
The full width is usable — you can sleep right up to the perimeter without feeling like you'll roll off, which effectively makes a Queen feel wider.
3.
The bed holds its shape — a firmer perimeter resists the outward spread that develops over years of use.
Combine that with a firm overall feel and you get a mattress with a genuinely stable, edge-to-edge sleep surface — the reason firm beds are usually recommended to couples and to larger sleepers.
The Comfort Layer: Quilted, Not Just StackedThe top isn't a flat slab of foam — it's quilted, which changes both how it feels and how long it lasts:
•
2.5 cm of #20 comfort foam — the first contact. Light cushioning that takes the edge off without swallowing you.
•
1.5 cm of #32 gel-infused memory foam — targeted pressure relief. Gel helps carry heat away from the surface while the memory foam contours to the shoulder, hip and lower back. Kept thin deliberately: enough to relieve pressure, not enough to create sink.
•
1500# polyester fibre wadding — quilted together with the foams above to add loft and lock the fill in place, so the surface doesn't bunch or drift toward the middle over time.
Underneath sits 3 cm of #25 high-resilience foam, the hand-off layer. It takes the load from the comfort system and spreads it evenly across the coil unit, so the transition from cushioning to support is smooth rather than abrupt.
The Cover: Jacquard Knit on Top, Non-Slip Beneath•
Top panel — 350 gsm jacquard knitted fabric. Knit has natural stretch, so it moves with the comfort layers instead of fighting them; the quilting pattern holds its shape and the surface feels soft rather than papery. At 350 gsm it's a substantial weight that stands up to years of sheet changes.
•
Base — non-slip fabric. The underside grips your platform, slatted frame or box spring, so the mattress stays exactly where you put it instead of gradually drifting off-centre.
Who This Bed Is For
A firm mattress suits:
•
Back and stomach sleepers — these positions need the hips held level. A softer bed lets the pelvis drop and arches the lower back.
•
Heavier sleepers — more mass needs more resistance, or you'll bottom out against the support core.
•
Couples — firmer surfaces isolate movement better and give you more usable width.
•
Anyone who's felt "stuck" — if you've slept on deep memory foam and hated the sensation of not being able to turn over, this is the correction.
If you're a side sleeper under about 130 lb (60 kg), or you like the feeling of sinking into a bed, you'll probably be happier on a medium-soft model.
Single-Sided: No Flipping, EverThis is a single-sided (no-turn) mattress. The comfort system is built into the top only and the base is a non-slip structural layer. There's no flipping schedule and no "which side is up" question at 2 a.m.
What we do recommend: rotate it 180° (head to foot) every 3–6 months for the first couple of years. Two minutes, and it evens out wear better than anything else you can do.
Delivery and SetupYour mattress is compressed and roll-packed in a single reinforced export carton — far easier through doorways, up stairs and around tight corners than a fully built bed.
1.
Carry the carton to the bedroom (two people is easier; one person can manage most sizes).
2.
Unbox, lay the rolled mattress on the frame, and cut the outer wrap carefully.
3.
Let it expand. It's sleepable within a few hours and reaches full height in 24–72 hours.
A faint new-mattress smell for the first day or two is normal — ventilate the room and it clears.

FAQHow firm is "firm"? Around 7 out of 10. You'll feel the surface give slightly and then stop — supportive rather than hard. It's firmer than a medium mattress, softer than a board.
Is firm good for back pain? We can't make medical claims. What we can say is that firm surfaces help keep the hips level, which is what back and stomach sleepers generally need. If you have a specific condition, talk to a professional.
Will it feel too hard? It shouldn't. There's a real comfort layer — 1.5 cm of gel memory foam plus comfort foam and wadding — so you get pressure relief at the shoulder and hip. It just stops sooner than a softer bed would.
Do I need to flip it? No. It's single-sided — just rotate it head-to-foot every few months.
Is it good for couples? Yes. Independent coils absorb movement, and the firmer surface plus reinforced edge gives you more usable width.
How long until it's ready? Sleepable within hours; full height in 24–72 hours.
